Students moved from guided projects to creating and customizing their own games independently.

There is a profound shift that happens when a student goes from following a map to drawing their own.
Over Sessions 8, 9, and 10 at the Khadija Innovation Lab in Sheikh Ayach, Akkar, our Digital Literacy and Coding Program reached a critical milestone: the transition from guided learning to true independent creation.
In Sessions 8 & 9, our Grades 7–9 students tackled the Maze Escape Game. They learned to navigate a digital character through a screen; they built the walls, programmed the collision detection, and defined the winning conditions themselves. In designing these mazes, they learned a powerful lesson in debugging and logic: hitting a wall isn't a failure; it just triggers a reset so you can try a better route.
Then, in Session 10, the boundaries opened up. With the Fish and Shark Game, students moved from strict, step-by-step instructions to open-ended game design. They programmed survival mechanics, chase loops, and scoring systems, but more importantly, they took ownership of the creative process. They customized their sprites, introduced power-ups, added their own sound effects, and built multiple levels. The classroom transformed from a traditional learning space into a studio of young developers making their own executive decisions.
For young people in Lebanon, growing up in a context where so many boundaries and obstacles feel out of their control, this kind of agency is vital. Teaching them to code is about showing them that they have the capacity to design an environment, set the rules, and build a system where their own ideas drive the outcome.
Watching them transition from simply consuming technology to confidently architecting their own original projects is exactly why we started this journey.
